New Bedford Police had to pull a man out of a hole he dug behind a grave in Rural Cemetery.

Police say a witness reported seeing the man digging in the cemetery around 4:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon.

When officers arrived, they saw a 24-year-old man up to his chest in a hole, and recognized him from previous encounters.

The man said he began digging the hole around 4:00 that morning using a small garden tool and a plastic bottle, and that he had permission from the Federal Government to dig because he owned the land.

Officers pulled the man from the hole and sent him to St. Luke’s Hospital for evaluation.
