Police: Man in Mass. Kills Self After Failed Heist
LOWELL, Mass. (AP) – Authorities have identified the 66-year-old man who shot himself to death after what police said was a failed attempt to rob a bank in Lowell.
Investigators said William Champagne, of Lowell, took his own life on Saturday after firing two shots at a police officer. The officer had responded an alarm at the Lowell Cooperative Bank.
Authorities said Champagne then climbed a fire escape to the roof of a building, where he shot himself in the head. He was pronounced dead after being flown to a Boston hospital.
