Shooting in Central Falls leaves one dead, one in serious condition, police investigating

CENTRAL FALLS, R.I. (WLNE) – Central Falls police are actively investigating a double shooting Tuesday night that left one person dead and another seriously injured.

Officers responded to the basketball court at Sacred Heart Park at around 8:50 p.m.

Upon arriving at the scene investigators found a man, later identified as 28-year-old Malcom Sostre, lying on the court. Sostre was transported to Rhode Island Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Investigators found another victim about a block away from the scene suffering from a gunshot wound to the head.

Police said that the 19-year-old man had fled from the scene after being shot, and that he is not a suspect.

He was also taken to Rhode Island Hospital where he is in serious but stable condition.

Officials have yet to identify the second victim, but said he is expected to make a full recovery.

“There are no words that will take back last night’s senseless violence, or the irreparable damage and heartache this has caused their families and friends for the rest of time,” said Mayor Maria Rivera.

Central Falls PD says they arrested 19-year-old Miguel Liriano on a firearm charge, who is not believed to be a suspect.

Investigators are actively searching for a suspect after multiple cars fled the scene following the shooting.

“I would like to thank our responding officers, emergency personnel, and Nonviolence Institute workers who immediately stepped-up last night and are working hard to investigate and support the families during this difficult time,” the mayor continued.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident should contact the Central Falls Police Department at 401-727-7411.

The incident remains under investigation and no further information has been released at this time.

Central Falls police says the last homicide in the city was in April of 2020.

This is a developing story, more details will be added as they become available.
