Police search for New Bedford carjacking suspect

New Bedford Police are searching for a suspect who carjacked and robbed a woman near Kempton and County Streets.

The 36-year-old victim was leaving a business when a man approached her car. The woman said the man approached her and said “do you recognize me?” She said he then pulled out a sharp object and ordered her into her car. The victim said that he then demanded that she drive. The two traveled several blocks before he demanded her purse and she exited the vehicle and ran.

She made it to the area of County and Sycamore Street where she was able to ask for help. The suspect fled in the victim's vehicle. Twenty minutes late the victim's car was spotted on Mill Street by a police officer.

The victim said she believes she went to high school with the suspect who is described as a Hispanic male in his thirties standing at about 5'9 feet tall and weighing approximately 170 pounds.
