Police: Seekonk man stole money from his fundraising campaigns
By News Staff
Westport Police have arrested a man for stealing money from fundraising efforts he operated.
Detectives say 28-year-old Patrick Kane of Seekonk raised funds in southeastern Massachusetts and had at least one office in East Providence. He operated campaigns under many names including “Community Efforts”, and also had a fund drive in Westport back in 2013.
Kane allegedly held onto personal checks from donations he had already cashed, and then re-deposited them after changing the date. He deposited those checks into his business account, totaling nearly $5,000.
Police were able to identify him from bank surveillance video. The account he used had his name and another female relative listed as business partners.
Westport detectives had been searching for Kane as he continued to steal from other drives targeting Westport residents in an effort to raise money for a Constable Service.
The investigation is still ongoing and detectives are trying to identify other co-conspirators. Police caution everyone to make sure calls from solicitors are verified through their local police department.
