Police seize over 2 pounds of heroin in raid

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (AP) – A wiretap investigation that began in
Taunton and spilled over into Rhode Island has led to the arrest of
23 people together with the seizure of 2.3 pounds of heroin and
illegal firearms including AK47s, shot guns and handguns.

That's according to Bristol County District Attorney C. Samuel
Sutter, who announced the results of the operation Thursday. The
investigation marks a significant development in his office as it
uses electronic surveillance to build cases against organized drug
traffickers instead of sitting back and wait for individual
suspects to commit offenses before yanking them off the streets.

Investigators' main target was 38-year-old Alexander Torres Sr.,
described as leader of a sophisticated drug distribution
organization with homes in Taunton and Central Falls, R.I. Those
arrested include his suppliers, runners, dealers and customers.
