NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) _ A Middletown marriage and family therapist has been accused of fraudulently obtaining nearly $84,000 from Blue Cross Blue Shield.
Rhode Island State Police said 55-year-old Denise Fleurant of Little Compton was arrested Thursday and charged with insurance fraud and filing a false document. They say she owns Newport Psychological Services in Middletown.
Authorities allege Fleurant submitted fraudulent bills for psychological testing her patients never received. State police say 19 patients cooperated and said they were billed for services not rendered. Officials said employees also reported observing fraudulent billing practices.
A woman who answered the phone at Newport Psychological Services and identified herself as “Dr. Fleurant” initially called it a “bizarre day” when asked about the arrest and charges. She then said she did not understand and would “look into it.”
