WARWICK, R.I. (AP) _ A collapsed sewer line has caused Rhode Island officials to close a portion of the upper Narragansett Bay to shell fishing.

The state Department of Environmental Management and the Department of Public Health announced the closing on Monday and advised that any shellfish harvested near the outlet of Old Mill Creek not be eaten until further notice.

The Warwick Sewer Authority discovered the collapsed sewer line late Sunday, which resulted in the overflow of about 300,000 gallons of sewage from a manhole.

Officials said crews were able to stop the overflow by setting up a temporary bypass and were repairing the sewer line on Monday.

Conimicut Beach in Warwick has also been closed due the situation.
