Powerball prize is 12th largest in the game’s history

One lucky winner could start off the new year as a very wealthy person. Saturday’s Powerball drawing is for one of the largest prizes ever.

The odds of winning the huge Powerball jackpot are one in 292 million. But many here in Southern New England are hoping to beat those odds.

"Powerball is up to $334 million dollars. We have it up on our electronic sign outside,” said Kenneth Khoury, owner of City Liquors in Providence.

City Liquors owner Kenneth Khoury made sure to advertise the big prize because when the jackpot is the twelfth largest in the game’s history, he knows business is going to be good.

"People see that. They rush in. They come in to play a Powerball. And they buy a bottle of wine also or a six pack of beer. So yeah it works hand in hand,” Khoury said.

And that’s the case for most stores with a lottery license. The last time they saw this big of a payout was three years ago.

"A lot of people when it’s low, they don’t want to buy. It can be $40 million and they say no I’m not going to play it at $40 million,” said Cheryl Gauthier, manager of Sak’s Centredale Liquors in North Providence.

But Saturday’s draw is high and ticket-buyers are optimistic, despite the fact that you have a better chance of getting struck by lightning than winning.

"They still have that dream of winning. They’re all going to win. They all want the winning ticket. They all say I have the winning ticket,” said Khoury.

If you are the lucky winner, experts say the first thing you should do is go out and get a lawyer.
