Princeton Hockey Takes Down Brown At Meehan Auditorium
Brown University Press Release
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Sophomore Mark Naclerio (Milford, Conn.) and junior Matt Lorito (Oakville, Ontario) notched back-to-back second-period goals to even the score, but Princeton answered right back with the game-winning tally and hung on the rest of the way as the Brown men's hockey team fell to the Tigers, 3-2, Friday evening at Meehan Auditorium.
Brown drops to 9-12-3 on the season and 6-10-1 in the ECAC, while Princeton improves to 5-19 overall and 4-13 in conference play.
Naclerio scored his team-high 16th goal and Lorito converted a penalty shot for the second time this season. Freshman Tyler Steel (Kelowna, British Columbia) made 28 saves in net for the Bears, while Colton Phinney stopped 36 shots on the other end. Brown outshot the Tigers, 38-31.
Princeton opened up the scoring at the 8:59 mark in the first period when Hayden Anderson fielded a pass from Andrew Calof and beat Steel high glove side to push the Tigers on top, 1-0.
From there, the Bears made a strong attack at the net, highlighted by a shot from Ryan Jacobson (Greenwood Village, Colo.) that rattled off the post. The Bears won the battle for shots in the opening stanza by a 13-8 margin.
The Tigers added another goal at 5:07 in the second period, when Ben Foster skated in front of the net and put back an initial shot to give the visitors the lead, 2-0.
Brown responded just 1:19 later as Naclerio notched his team-high 16th tally of the season. Lorito received a pass from junior Joey de Concilys (St. Catherine's, Ontario) and skated down the right side before his shot was denied by Phinney, but Naclerio followed in front of the crease and put back the rebound to pull the Bears within one, 2-1.
The Bears continued to attack and took advantage of a penalty at the 9:08 mark as Lorito was hooked on a rush to the net. Lorito buried the penalty shot to even the score, 2-2.
The tie game did not last long, however, as Ryan Siiro scored a power-play goal less than two minutes later when he knocked home a one-timer from the slot to push the Tigers back in front, 3-2. The Bears held a 15-14 shot advantage in the second period.
Brown came back in the third period with several stints of sustained pressure, headlined at five minutes into the frame when Nick Lappin (Geneva, Ill.) had a one-timer saved and junior Massimo Lamacchia (Maple, Ontario) rang a shot off the post.
The Tigers answered back with a strong rush at the net, but Matt Wahl (Wellington, Fla.) blocked the initial attempt and Steel lunged to prevent the rebound to keep the Bears within one goal.
Brown made a final attempt late in the frame, but a pair of late shots from Wahl and Lappin were blocked, as the Tigers halted any chance of an equalizer to seal the win.
The Bears return to action on Saturday, Feb. 15 when they host No. 4 Quinnipiac at 4 p.m. For tickets, purchase online, call the Brown Athletics Ticket Office at (401) 863-2773, or walk up to the Box Office located in the Pizzitola Sports Center, open Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
