FIRST ON ABC6: Providence Police and Fire Contracts Approved

After a day-long vote for police in Providence, an agreement to avoid layoffs is approved.

By a vote of 299 to 120, members of the Providence police union OK'd a contract worked out with the city. The deal will keep up to 78 police officers from being laid off.

Union President Taft Manzotti stressed, however, that as part of the deal, over two dozen officers would retire.

Providence's firefighters also voted to accept a deal with the city, by a vote of 293 to 20. They will also avoid a number of layoffs.

The city of Providence had been working with both unions to find ways to cut millions of dollars from their budgets.
