Providence City Council Considering Resolution Opposing School Closures

Providence City Councilors are not happy with the lack of communication on Mayor Taveras' plan to close several city schools.

Mayor Taveras announced last month that he intends to close four Providence schools as part of a cost-cutting measure.  The city faces a nearly $100 million budget shortfall for the next fiscal year and the School Department is nearly $40 million of that.

Providence City Councilor Nicholas Narducci has been an opponent of the plan since it was announced and tells ABC6 that the Council is considering drafting a resolution urging the Mayor and the School Department not to actually take action on the closings until their questions have been answered.  Narducci explained that he and some of the other Councilors have a laundry list of questions or alternatives that so far, the School Department has not addressed.

The vote on the proposed closings is set to take place April 25th.
