Providence is denied $39 million dollars in federal funding to bring street cars back to the city. The funds would have giving a jump-start to the project that had an estimated cost of about $112 million dollars. The denial has now become a set back in revamping the state's capital city.
Projects in 37 other states were granted money from the federal program. Warwick was granted $10 million dollars to build a two–way road around the Apponaug business district.
Mayor Angel Taveras's spokesperson David Ortiz released the following statement
“We'll continue to aggressively pursue a sustainable funding strategy to make streetcars a reality in Providence. The federal procurement process can sometimes take more than a year. We are disappointed not to have received funding this year, but we're in no way discouraged.”
