WOONSOCKET, RI (WLNE) – A Providence man was arrested Wednesday and charged with one count of unnecessary cruelty.

An investigation was conducted by the Rhode Island SPCA on March 12 when they received a complaint from Ocean State Veterinary Specialists (OSVS).

Woonsocket Police assisted in the arrest of the 28-year-old suspect, Jesse Marinaro.

According to OSVS, Marinaro brought his 3 year old dog, Athena, to their facility on March 7 with a severe facial wound, along with significant swelling.

The investigation determined the injury stemmed from Athena being placed in a homemade whelping box constructed of sheet metal.

The investigation also found this injury had happened several days prior to Marinaro bringing Athena to the vet.

Lack of adequate veterinary care resulted in Athena to suffer in pain which warranted criminal charges against Marinaro.

Marinaro has several previous charges from 2018 which he has yet to answer for.

One of the charges included cruelty to a police canine.

He was arraigned in 6th District Court on the current charge and is being held at the ACI for a bail violation.
