Update: DEM identify victim in fatal Newport swimming incident
NEWPORT, R.I. (WLNE)– The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management has identified the 25-year old man who died while swimming of the rocks on Newport’s coast on Monday.
Joshua C. Jones, of Providence, died after an incident at the north end of the Brenton Point shoreline in Newport, near the Castle Hill Inn.
According to DEM spokesperson Gail Mastrati, Jones was swimming and diving off the rocks earlier Monday in an area known as “12 O’clock High.”
Swimming is not permitted in that area, Mastrati said.
Witnesses told DEM investigators that Jones was trying to pull himself out of the water when a wave knocked him back in, and he was unable to pull himself out.
Newport Fire Department rescue swimmers were able to pull Jones out and administered CPR at the scene.
Jones was taken to Newport Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The incident remains under investigation by state Environmental Police and the Newport Police Department.
