“And his last words to me was, They are robbing me ma,” Sheria Hazard said. She was on the phone with Rivers as he walked home froma  friends house.

“And I just heard him breathing and his hear beat was so fast, eating rapidly. To me it sounded like someone was patting him down. I heard the voice of someone say get off the F’ing phone. And I said who’s that. And he said they are robbing me ma,” she said.

Rivers was rushed to the Jersey City Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Preliminary investigation indicates the motive of the shooting to be robbery, as Rivers’ phone and money were gone.

Rivers, son of Jersey City Fire Chief, Darren Rivers, was visiting family and his four children, and was walking to his mother’s home at the time of the shooting.

He recently graduated from Johnston and Wales University and was pursuing work as a chef.
“He was working on his resume and wanted to buy new chef gear and stuff, so he was looking,” Hazard said.

“Did he ever cook for you? Yea every morning I would ask him to make me eggs or something.

Hazard remembers Rivers fondly.

“Loving, caring, funny. He had so many emotions and he was an amazing dad.”
