PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – Edilsar Alvarado, 40, of Providence was found guilty of two counts of first degree child molestation in a jury-waived trial that lasted two weeks.

During the trial the State proved that Alvarado molested a 13 year-old whom he smuggled into the country from Guatemala back in 2008.

The defendant admitted under oath that he and the young girl had been involved in a relationship from the time she entered the US at age 13 until she left his residence at age 19.

At the age of 14 she became pregnant.

The Rhode Island State Police began the investigation in May of 2015 with help from the Attorney General’s Office. The teen reported to officials that she and Alvarado met when she was 11 years-old in Guatemala while he was on a trip visiting his family.

The victim was smuggled into the country from Mexico in 2008, the entirety of the entrance was arranged and paid for by the defendant. The journey took approximately one month where the girl traveled by foot at night with assistance from a person the defendant paid called “a coyote”.

After one failed attempt the victim was brought into Rhode Island by Alvarado where she was forced into a sexual relationship with him. He enrolled her in the Rhode Island school district pretending to be her cousin..

Sentencing is scheduled for July 25, 2017
