PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – A Rhode Island man authorities say was driving drunk when he ran a red light and struck another vehicle, killing the driver and injuring the passenger, has been sent to prison for nine years.
Attorney General Peter Neronha announced Monday that 26-year-old Brian Torres, of Providence, was sentenced last week after pleading no contest to driving under the influence, death resulting in connection with the October crash that claimed the life of 29-year-old Frank Perry Jr.
In addition to the prison term, Torres was fined $5,000, faces a five-year loss of license, and was ordered to attend substance abuse counseling.
Police say Torres was driving a landscaping company’s small dump truck in the early morning hours when he crashed into Perry’s vehicle.
