Providence Mayor to Deliver State of City Address
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – Providence Mayor Angel Taveras is set to deliver the State of the City address as he wrestles with a $22 million deficit he says could force the city into bankruptcy.
The Democratic mayor, who just finished his first year in office, warned last week that “devastation” is on the horizon if the city's retirees don't accept pension cuts and major tax-exempt institutions such as Brown University don't contribute more in voluntary payments.
He says residents are already paying more in taxes, services have been cut and others need to sacrifice. A year ago, the city's projected budget was $110 million.
Taveras will deliver the address on Monday evening from the City Council chamber at City Hall.
