PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE)- A Rhode Island man wanted for murder was arrested overnight by U.S. Border Patrol in San Diego, California.

35-year-old Michael Domenech was wanted on a murder charge of the fatal stabbing of 31-year-old Cory Vargas, says Major David Lapatin.

Vargas was stabbed on Swiss Street in Providence on September 24.

U.S. Border Patrol Agent Jeff Stephenson said around 2 a.m. on Saturday, Domenech approached the Border Patrol checkpoint on I-8 near Pine Valley, California, in a gray 2015 Lexus sedan.

After a K-9 detection team alerted agents to the vehicle, they approached the driver who sped off from the checkpoint at a high rate of speed.

Agents used a tire deflation device which was successful at puncturing one of the Lexus’ tires.  The pursuit continued for another 20 minutes westbound on I-8.  The chase came to a stop on Mission Gorge Road, when agents were able to obtain Domenech, who was then taken into custody.

Further record checks revealed that Domenech was wanted for murder in Rhode Island.  U.S. Border Patrol agents say the stolen Lexus will be turned over to the U.S. Marshals Service.
