Providence officials gather to pay tribute to the city’s fallen police officers

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — A tribute to fallen police officers was held at the Providence Public Safety Complex on Friday.

The annual memorial service and wreath laying ceremony during National Police Week honors the memory of all the fallen officers of the department.

Mayor Brett Smiley and Chief Oscar Perez spoke about officers to made the ultimate sacrifice while protecting the community.

The service paid tribute to the 10 members of the department who were killed in the line of duty, starting with Watchman William Pullan, who died in May 1852.

The latest name called was Srgt. Maxwell Dorley, who was promoted posthumously after he died in a crash on the way to a call in April 2012.

Officials also honored the memory of members of the department who have recently passed away.
