Providence Police name murder victim on Admiral Street

PROVIDENCE, RI (WLNE) – Providence Police detectives are investigating a homicide at Joe’s Sandwich Shop, located at the intersection of Admiral Street and River Ave.

50-year-old Mai Jweinat was found deceased at Joe’s Sandwich Shop Friday afternoon, police say.

Witnesses tell ABC6 that they heard screaming in the area around 4:00 p.m.

Jweinat’s son, Gregory Jweinat, was also assaulted and taken to the hospital for his injuries, according to Maj. David Lapatin.

Officials say the suspect in the murder, 20-year-old Isaiah Araujo, from Connecticut and Providence, was apprehended nearby on Gloucester Street. Officials say he was taken away in an ambulance and is in critical condition.

Araujo has been charged with felony assault in relation to Gregory Jweinat’s injuries. Araujo has also been charged with breaking and entering into Joe’s Sandwich Shop.

Police tell ABC6 more information will be released on Monday.
