Providence police arrest man after attempted kidnapping of 11-year-old girl

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE)- Providence police arrested a 50-year-old man after he attempted to abduct an 11-year-old girl from her own yard Tuesday night.

Police said officers were flagged down just before 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Officers were told an 11-year-old girl was playing in her backyard on Admiral Street, when a man approached and threw something away into one of the trash cans at the end of the driveway.

The man then walked around the property several times before he grabbed the young girl’s arm and tried to pull her away.

The girl told police she was able to pull away and escape, then ran into her home. She saw the man get into a white car and drive towards Douglas Avenue.

Witnesses were able to catch the man’s license plate number and gave it to police.

Officers ran the cars registration, which came back to an individual in Cranston. Investigators contacted the owner of the vehicle, who told them her son, Glenn Chamberland had the car.

The mother told police Chamberland lives in the Douglas Avenue area.

Providence officers found the car at the intersection of Douglas and Veazie and apprehended Chamberland.

The young girl positively identified him as the man who tried to take her from her yard.

Chamberland was charged with kidnapping and one count of simple assault.
