UPDATE: Man arrested, charged in Providence fatal shooting

Providence Police have arrested and charged Saul Rivera, 20, in connection to Friday's early morning shooting.

Rivera was charged with choking his ex-girlfriend and then shooting 24-year-old Derreck Almanzar.

Rivera is to be arraigned in front of a bail commissioner Saturday morning, being charged with murder and felony domestic assault. Gun charges may come later.

Police were called to the area of Chalkstone Ave and River Street in Providence around 1 a.m. on Friday. On scene they found blood and broken glass but no injured party.

The victim, 24-year-old Derreck Almanzar of Providence, was transported by private vehicle to Roger Williams Medical Center with a gunshot wound. He was then transported to Rhode Island Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries around 2:45 a.m.

This marks the second homicide of the year.
