Investigation underway after 20-year-old man shot, killed in Providence

The victim was identified on Monday by Providence Police.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE)- Providence police are investigating the capital City’s twelfth homicide of the year Sunday evening.

Providence police tell ABC6 a 20-year-old man was shot and killed in the backyard of a Public Street home. The victim has been identified as Lucino Javier Arauz Bastardo.

Major David Lapatin said Bastardo was rushed to Rhode Island Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

This murder happening less than one week after a 19-year-old was shot and killed– less than a mile away.

Investigators continued to expand the crime scene as more and more shell casings were found along the street by bystanders.  Additionally, ABC6 News crews on the scene saw two witnesses put in the back of separate police cruisers.

Officers were seen going in and out of the home and speaking with neighbors where the backyard meets with Saratoga Street.

Major Lapatin told ABC6 there are no suspects or weapons found at this point in the investigation. Although it’s unclear what led up to the fatal shooting, Lapatin said the murder was most likely targeted.

“We believe the shooter was on foot, he came down the street you are on right now and opened fire at the corner of Saratoga,” he explained.

Neighbors said the area is typically filled with music and carefree children. They said they didn’t expect it to become a crime scene.

“We have to think about what we are doing, we are killing one another, we cannot do that, we have to be better,” said Ty’Relle Stephens, a Providence school board member.

Mayor Jorge Elorza was on the scene working with investigators and shared his condolences with the victim’s family.

Police said they are interviewing witnesses who may have more information as to what led up to this fatal shooting.
