Providence Police investigating an overnight stabbing

PROVIDENCE, R.I (WLNE) – Providence police are investigating a stabbing that happened in the early Saturday morning hours. 

According to police, at approximately 12:30 a.m, while officers were on routine patrol in the area of Elmwood and Princeton ave, A male subject, 37-year-old Derek Dacosta was observed flagging the officers down.

Police observed that Dacosta suffered from wounds on his upper arm and to the right side of his neck behind the ear. 

Police say both areas were bleeding “profusely” and rescue was immediately called. 

Dacosta was transported to Rhode Island Hospital.

While attempting to speak with Dacosta, it was quickly determined by police that he was hard of hearing.

Due to Dacosta’s physical condition and him being deaf, Detective Ziroli was unable to communicate with him at the time. 

According to the department, several requests were made for an Officer who is familiar with sign language to no avail. 

Police obtained the address for Dacosta’s father and notified him to advise his son that he can respond into Central Station or contact the police at a later date if he would like to make a criminal complaint and leave a formal statement.
