Providence prepares for major heat wave

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The city of Providence is preparing for a heat wave beginning Thursday by extending pool and splash pad hours and opening cooling centers across the city.
Mayor Smiley’s office announced that pools and splash pads will be open from noon to 7 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, and and noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday.
The Providence Emergency Management Agency also announced a number of cooling centers will be available across the city, including local libraries and shelters.
The city has provided the centers with free water bottles to give out to those in need.
