Providence Schools Plan $19M School Update

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – The Providence School Department has committed $19 million to renovate and reopen West Broadway Elementary School, which closed more than three years ago over the objections of parents.

The state Department of Education has given tentative approval to a preliminary plan, and school officials will submit a more comprehensive proposal that includes architectural renderings shortly.

School officials would like to reopen the building in next year, but district chief financial officer Carleton Jones tells The Providence Journal that 2012 may be a more realistic deadline.

The school closed in 2007 because of fire code violations. Renovations would include bringing the building up to code and opening up space inside the school.
