Providence teacher suspended indefinitely for drug arrest

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – A Providence middle school teacher has been suspended indefinitely after being arrested last week on drug charges.
Coventry police say Bruce Smith was arrested Friday after a search of his home turned up more than 24 grams of cocaine and more than $1,000.
Authorities say the arrest followed a two-month investigation. They say the 40-year-old Smith is a teacher at the Gilbert Stewart Middle School.
Providence school officials say there is no evidence any illegal activity occurred at school. They also say an internal investigation has been launched.
Smith is charged with possession of cocaine with intent to deliver. Online court records show he posted bail after his court appearance on Monday.
His defense attorney did not return a message Monday seeking comment. Smith's next court date is Dec. 12.
