Providence teachers, ABC6 team up for summer lessons

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE)– The Providence Teachers Union and ABC6 are teaming up  to keep elementary and secondary school students learning all summer long.

The “Learning Doesn’t Stop: Lessons on ABC6” program gets its start on Monday and continues every weekday.

Two 15-minute lessons will be posted, one in English and one in Spanish. The days will be targeted to different age groups: Mondays’ lessons for kindergartners and first-graders, Tuesdays for second- and third-graders,  and Wednesdays for fourth- and fifth-graders. Thursdays’ lessons are targeted to middle-schools and Fridays will be for high school students.

Providence public school teachers will be presenting the program each day.

The lessons will be available on both the ABC6 website and on the Providence Teachers Union website.

Providence Teachers Union President Maribeth Calabro said it was important for students to be prepared for the fall, given the difficulty of the past semester.

“It’s a way for us to try and keep in touch with our kids over the summer, and try to just support them because of the distance learning,” Calabro said. “Hopefully they’ll be able to not have this big of a gap in learning loss as they might have had if we did nothing.”
