Providence to host thousands during 2023 Army-Navy game at Gillette Stadium

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The 124th Army-Navy football game will be held at Gillette Stadium in December of 2023, now offering Providence multiple economic opportunities.

“It’s filling hotel rooms in December which is actually the slowest month of the year for Providence hotels,” said Kristen Adamo, president and CEO of the Providence Warwick Convention and Visitors Bureau. “It allows us to recruit corporate events. A lot of corporations do events around the game.”

While Army cadets plan to travel back and forth from West Point to Gillette on the day of the game, Providence plans to host thousands of midshipmen downtown.

“We’ll be hosting about 3,000-4,000 midshipmen in the Convention Center, in the exhibit halls. It’s going to be cots and bunk beds, but nothing that the Midshipmen aren’t used to,” Adamo explained.

Former United States Military Academy alum Sen. Jack Reed, D-R.I., told ABC 6 News, “I can remember my first Army-Navy game in 1967. Of course, I have to say, ‘Go Army’.”

After years of work by multiple organizations, Rhode Island and New England now playing host to the event’s first trip to New England.

“By staying in Providence, you can go down to the Naval War College, you can go to South County, Blackstone Valley. So, what we’ll be doing is really, ‘Stay in Providence and see Rhode Island,” Adamo concluded.

The Providence Warwick Convention and Visitors Bureau said they do not have any expectations of revenue, as this is uncharted waters for Rhode Island and New England.
