Providence woman hit by stray bullet while holding 3-week-old baby inside apartment

PROVIDENCE, R.I (WLNE) – A Providence woman was injured Sunday night after a stray bullet entered her first-floor apartment while she was holding her 3-week-old infant in bed.

Providence Police responded to Ridge Street just before 11:00 p.m for reports of shots fired. Witnesses on the scene reported hearing 4-5 gunshots and saw a man run away and then enter a triple-decker on Ridge Street, while a black car sped off.

“It is concerning, just cause it is the second real violent act that’s happened around here as of recent. You know, definitely gonna be more vigilant around here,” said Christian Mills, a resident of Ridge Street who heard the shots fired.

Police said Monday that a bullet had gone through the victim’s bedroom wall and hit her in the knee.

“We heard something like boom, like boom, we thought at first, we thought it was like the phone maybe burst, we were charging the phone. But after some seconds or minutes I saw my wife bleeding,” said Emedi Lotengya, the victim’s husband.

Lotengya and his wife have six children, all of whom were home on Sunday night. Lotengya said his wife was holding their 3-week-old daughter at the time the shots were fired.

“How, how can this happen? How can this be? And what’s the real reason behind this? Are we really the target? Or is it just happened to… something other people were doing and just… we don’t know. We’re asking ourselves these kinds of questions.”

His wife was taken to Rhode Island Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. She has since been released and is recovering at home.

The family moved here a few years ago and are now wondering whether or not they should stay in their current home.

“Should we move? Should we stay? Are we really targeted, targets, or not? Just questions that we don’t know what to do,” Lotengya said.

Police said Monday no arrests have been made.
