PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE)-Providence police warned community members about “exploding manhole covers” in the downtown area around Pine and Friendship Streets on Thursday morning.

Police and firefighters set up a perimeter and asked people to avoid the area for a couple of hours while crews worked to repair the issues.

The viewer who filmed this video says he witnessed the manhole cover blow straight up into the air, about three feet high.

National Grid said that a set of secondary cables were burning in the manholes, causing the fires.

Crews were able to repair the cables overnight.

Michael Dalo, a spokesperson for National Grid, says this is not a common occurrence.
