Providence’s ‘Superman Building’ named among America’s most endangered

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – An iconic building in Downtown Providence is now on a list of 11 of America’s most endangered historic places.

The Industrial Trust Company Building – better known to many Rhode Islanders as the “Superman Building” – has been vacant since 2013.

Now the 91-year-old building has found itself on the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s list of America’s 11 most endangered historic places in 2019.

The list includes historic American buildings in danger of destruction or irreparable damage.

The Providence Preservation Society is excited about this listing. They said they are hoping it will mean a better future for the building.

“We were really optimistic when we applied that if we would be able to get on the national trust list, they would bring resources to it that we can’t even start to imagine,” said Brent Runyon, Executive Director of the Preservation Society. “What that will be, we don’t know, but we expect that conversations with the owner might develop around something that we haven’t thought of.”

Since 1987, more than 300 historic places have ended up on the list, including a couple of other Rhode Island buildings.

A majority of those 300 places were saved. Fewer than 15 were ultimately lost.
