PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) Rhode Island Pride has postponed all June events, according to a statement the nonprofit group issued Thursday afternoon.

There is no date yet set for the annual PrideFest and Illuminated Night Parade, but the LGBTQ advocacy group is working with the mayor’s office and the Department of Arts, Culture, and Tourism “to pick a new date when the time is appropriate and safe for all ” said President Ray Sirico.

“This is an unfortunate but crucially important step in mitigating the spread of COVID-19 which prioritizes the health and wellness of the LGBTQIA+ community and our allies,” Sirico said in a statement.

The group is now looking for alternative ways to celebrate in June.
