R.I. Supreme Court to expedite hearings for 52 inmates at ACI

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE)- The Rhode Island Supreme Court has ordered an expedited hearing for 52 inmates at the state’s prison in an effort to reduce transmission of COVID-19.

As reported by ABC 6 News on Thursday, Rhode Island’s Office of the Public Defender submitted a petition calling for the release of the 76 prisoners, who were due to be released in 90 days.

Acting on that petition, the Supreme Court today ordered the expedited hearing for 52 of those inmates.

Prisoners were required to demonstrate that they would have shelter upon release. Some offenses, such as domestic assault charges, were a disqualification, according to  court documents.

Inmates must not show symptoms related to COVID-19, and are required to quarantine for 14 days upon release.
