Racist Graffiti Discovered at Warwick Synagogue

WARWICK, R.I. (AP) – Police are investigating racist graffiti spray painted on a Warwick synagogue.

The graffiti – a backward swastika and the first four letters of a racist word for blacks – was discovered by a neighbor on the outside of Temple Am David on Thursday.

Cantor Richard Perlman called the act of vandalism “cowardly and frightening.”

There are no suspects but police did find a can of spray paint near the scene and are looking at surveillance video.

Police Chief Stephen McCartney says if the vandalism is determined to be a hate crime, the perpetrator could face stiffer penalties.

State Jewish leaders say the vandalism may have been sparked by the Israeli commando raid on a flotilla carrying humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip that left nine people dead.
