PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ Rhode Island Gov. Gina Raimondo says Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s proposal to ban Muslims from entering the country is wrong-headed and bombastic rhetoric that plays into the hands of terrorists.

The Democratic governor was asked about Trump’s comments at a Statehouse event on Tuesday.

She says it’s not a time to give in to racism, religious intolerance and heated rhetoric that is not based in fact. Raimondo says Trump’s rhetoric does nothing to keep people safe and is exactly what terrorists want to hear.

Raimondo is supporting Democrat Hillary Clinton in the presidential race.

Raimondo previously said Rhode Island would welcome Syrian refugees if asked to do so by the federal government. Several other governors have sought to block refugees from the war-torn country from resettling in their states.
