‘Rally 4 Recovery’ for alcohol and drug addiction

PROVIDENCE, RI- Thousands gathered at Roger Williams National Memorial Park to celebrate just how far they've come.

“Since March 15, 2003,” said Holly Cekala.

Cekala's decade–long recovery from drugs and alcohol wasn't easy. “I think stigma has a lot to do with it,” she said.

That negative stigma keeps a lot of people from seeking help, but today was about encouragement.

“So they can see how much support they can get if they just ask for a little bit of help,” said Cekala.

Former Rhode Island congressman Patrick Kennedy is also a recovering alcoholic.

“I've learned that there's a solution in life and it does not involve turning to drugs and alcohol for relief,” said Kennedy.

He's advocating for medical treatment for addiction.

Information about treatment and support services were available, including a prayer orchard to encourage loved ones to stay strong as they move forward.

“It's an amazing experience thus far to see that so many care about this problem. It touches everyone and it's just wonderful to be here,” said Florine Lecomte.
