Beginning Saturday night crews will be working to shift traffic in Providence. Overnight into the early Sunday morning, traffic heading onto the old Atwells Avenue off ramp from 95 South (Exit 21) will be rerouted to the new ramp from the viaduct project. The new Exit 21 is located well before the older one, just after Exit 22. ABC6 News asked some drivers what their thoughts were on the closure.

"Drivers are definitely going to be confused, and it is also going to cause accidents because of the exit being closed. They are going to be used to going on that exit," says driver Deja Brown.

In order to finish the new Atwells Avenue bridge, the Rhode Island Department of Transportation is demolishing the existing one and closing the 6-10 connector located underneath Exit 21 for the 30-hour period. Drivers may be concerned about these changes, but RIDOT’s acting Deputy Chief Engineer, Joseph Baker, says detours will be in place to help drivers.

"Those detours will be clearly marked. We will have police details along those routes. Basically, it will take traffic northbound one exit on 95 North to bring traffic back southbound," explains Baker.

He says the project is behind schedule, so they are trying to do things as efficiently as possible.

"Right now we are trying to accelerate the project, get as much done before the winter season and also allow work to continue through the winter if possible," he adds.

Baker says there will likely be travel delays, but overall it will be lot less than they would see during the weekdays.

"It’s probably always a confusion, but if you’re from the town you’ll get use to it real quick," says driver Sam Sinel.
