Rash of car break-ins in frustrates Warwick neighbors

WARWICK, R.I. (WLNE) — The stretch of homes along Knowles Drive and Kiwanee Road in Warwick looks just like any other residential neighborhood by day. But at night, folks who live here have become the frequent targets of a brazen car thief–or thieves.

“Violated. Violated, big time,” said resident Maribeth Zoglio.

Whoever is doing this walks along the road from car to car, breaking windows and stealing whatever they can–iPhones, iPads, laptops and more. Zoglio and her husband Tim say they believe the whoever is doing this, is using the money to buy drugs.

The Zoglios say their vehicles have been broken into at least seven times, and more than 10 of their neighbors have been targets, too. They’ve installed surveillance cameras, which have caught a man going through cars, but it’s still hard to make out who it is. Sadly, the Zoglios say this has become a new normal.

“It’s frustrating. Every morning I get up to see if my window is broken,” said Tim Zoglio.

“I’m used to it by now. I don’t leave anything of value in my car. I don’t lock my cars. I’d rather have them rummage through then to come out and have a window smashed,” said Maribeth Zoglio.

Warwick Police are actively investigating, and have ramped up patrols in that area. But because these burglaries are happening on foot, this smash-and-grab spree has proven tough to solve.

“We’re just working as a team to try and figure this out,” said Maribeth Zoglio.

“Maybe he does something wrong to the wrong person and it goes south pretty quick,” said Tim Zoglio.

The Zoglios say they believe the suspect is someone who leaves nearby. Meanwhile police are warning folks in the area not to leave any valuables in their cars.
