Red Sox Add Former Teammate David Murphy as Non-Roster Invitee

BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox have added outfielder David Murphy as a non-roster invitee to the team’s 2016 Spring Training roster.
Senior Vice President/General Manager Mike Hazen made the announcement.
The Red Sox now have a total of 17 players in Major League Spring Training camp as non-roster invitees.
Murphy, 34, hit .283 (102-for-361) with 10 home runs and 50 RBI in 132 games (111 starts) between the Cleveland Indians and Los Angeles Angles of Anaheim in 2015. Among American League pinch-hitters last season (min. 25 AB), the left-handed batter ranked first in home runs (3), batting average (.314, 11-for-35), and slugging percentage (.600).
Selected by Boston in the first round of the 2003 June Draft (17th overall), Murphy has appeared in 1,110 major league games with the Red Sox (2006-07), Rangers (2007-13), Indians (2014-15), and Angels (2015), batting .274 (950-for-3,467) with 104 home runs, 203 doubles, and 472 RBI. Named the 2005 Red Sox Minor League Defensive Player of the Year, he has posted a .990 fielding percentage (16 E/1,663 TC) with 49 assists in 966 major league games (832 starts) in the outfield.
