RED SOX DO NOT TENDER 2011 CONTRACTS TO RIGHT-HANDED PITCHER TAYLOR BUCHHOLZ AND LEFT-HANDED PITCHERS ANDREW MILLER AND HIDEKI OKAJIMA
BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox tonight announced that the club will not tender 2011 contracts to right-handed pitcher Taylor Buchholz and left-handed pitchers Andrew Miller and Hideki Okajima.
As a result, Buchholz, Miller and Okajima will become free agents. The Red Sox tendered 2011 contracts to the other 21 unsigned players on their Major League roster.
The announcements were made by Executive Vice President/General Manager Theo Epstein.
Teams had a deadline of 11:59 p.m. ET on Thursday night to tender 2011 contracts to all unsigned players on their Major League rosters. Any players not tendered contracts are granted free agency.
Buchholz, who was claimed off waivers by Boston from the Toronto Blue Jays on November 15, combined to go 1-0 with a 3.75 ERA (5 ER/12.0 IP) in nine relief appearances between the Colorado Rockies and Blue Jays in 2010. The 29-year-old right-hander also went 1-1 with a 5.06 ERA (12 ER/21.1 IP) in 21 minor league rehab games (one start) in the Rockies system last year after missing the entire 2009 season due to Tommy John surgery. Buchholz owns a 19-21 record with one save and a 4.39 ERA (139 ER/285.0 IP) in 135 career Major League appearances (27 starts) with the Houston Astros (2006), Rockies (2007-08, 2010) and Blue Jays (2010).
The 25-year-old Miller was acquired by the Red Sox from the Florida Marlins on November 12. The left-hander posted a 1-5 record with an 8.54 ERA (31 ER/32.2 IP) in nine games (seven starts) with Florida in 2010. He also combined to go 2-9 with a 5.35 ERA (60 ER/101.0 IP) in 21 minor league starts between the Marlins Double-A Jacksonville (18 starts) and Single-A Jupiter (three starts) affiliates before being recalled to the Majors on August 19. Selected by Detroit in the first round (sixth overall) of the 2006 First-Year Player Draft, Miller owns a 15-26 record with a 5.84 ERA (191 ER/294.1 IP) in 79 career Major League appearances (54 starts) over parts of five seasons with the Tigers (2006-07) and Marlins (2008-10).
Okajima, 34, went 4-4 with a 4.50 ERA (23 ER/46.0 IP) and recorded 11 holds in 56 relief appearances with the Red Sox in 2010. Signed by Boston as an international free agent on November 30, 2006, the left-hander has tallied a 16-8 record with six saves and 85 holds while posting a 3.06 ERA (81 ER/238.0 IP) over 254 career Major League games with the Red Sox.
With tonight's moves, Boston now has 37 players on its Major League roster.
