Red Sox Promote Valencia, Beato, Stewart for End of the Season
RED SOX RECALL RIGHT-HANDED PITCHERS PEDRO BEATO AND ZACH STEWART, AND THIRD BASEMAN DANNY VALENCIA
Boston Red Sox today recalled right-handed pitchers Pedro Beato and
Zach Stewart, and third baseman Danny Valencia from Triple-A Pawtucket.
All three players will be active for tonight's game against the
Baltimore Orioles at Fenway Park. With the move, the club's active
Major League roster is at 35.
The announcement was made by Executive Vice President/General Manager Ben Cherington.
who was acquired from the Mets on August 16, will be with the Red Sox
for the second time this season having earned the win in his only outing
on his previous stint with the club, a 2.0-inning relief appearance on
August 26 vs. Kansas City over which he allowed two runs. The
25-year-old yielded just two runs, one earned, and struck out nine
batters over 8.0 innings of work in seven games for the PawSox between
the regular season and International League playoffs. The right-hander
also pitched in seven games for the Mets earlier this season, all during
the month of July, and made 24 appearances (1 start) for Triple-A
Buffalo. Originally selected by the Orioles in the supplemental round
of the 2006 First-Year Player Draft, he has a 3-1 record with a 4.79 ERA
(39 ER/73.1 IP) and 46 strikeouts in 68 career Major League
appearances, all in relief, with the Mets (2011-12) and Red Sox (2012).
25-year-old Stewart will also be in his second stint with Boston this
year. He started and took the loss in his only previous appearance with
the club on August 29 against the Angels in Anaheim. Acquired from the
White Sox on June 24, Stewart went 2-0 with a 3.27 ERA (4 ER/11.0 IP)
in two postseason starts for Pawtucket en route to the club's Governor's
Cup Championship. In 11 regular-season starts for the PawSox in 2012,
he went 3-5 with a 3.94 ERA (26 ER/59.1 IP) and 42 strikeouts compared
to 14 walks. Originally selected by the Reds in the third round of the
2008 First-Year Player Draft, Stewart began the season with 18 games (1
start) for the White Sox and has pitched in 32 career Major League games
(13 starts) for the Blue Jays (2011), White Sox (2011-12) and Red Sox
(2012), posting a 3-9 record with a 6.55 ERA (73 ER/100.1 IP) and 63
28, played in four games for Boston from August 11-15, appearing at
third base in all four contests while going 1-for-8 (.125) with an RBI
at the plate. Acquired by the Red Sox from the Twins on August 5, he
hit .306 (15-for-49) with three doubles, a home run and eight RBI in 13
regular-season games for Pawtucket and knocked two homers and drove in
six runs during the PawSox Governor's Cup Championship run. Prior to
joining the Red Sox organization he split time in 2012 between Minnesota
(34 games) and the Twins Triple-A Rochester affiliate (69 games).
Originally selected by the Twins in the 19th round of the
2006 First-Year Player Draft, the right-handed hitter owns a .259
average (258-for-997) with 52 doubles, four triples, 24 home runs, 130
RBI, 106 runs and 63 walks in 277 career Major League games with the
Twins (2010-12) and Red Sox (2012).
