Redistricting Commission to hold meetings around state; first one held in Smithfield

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – The Special Commission of Reapportionment will hold several hearings around the state. The meetings will focus on the plans for the layout of the House and Senate to help garner public input.

The first meeting will be Monday, December 6, at 6:00 p.m. in the auditorium of Smithfield High School. Masks are required inside the building.

The schedule includes a presentation from Kimball Brace of Election Data Services Inc., focusing on an update, as well as discussion on the reallocation of prisoners, an explanation on the drawing process, another presentation for the initial plans of House and Senate districts, and finally, an explanation of the remaining of the reappointment process. Public comments will be accepted at the end of the presentation.

The constitution calls for the General Assembly to reapportion its districts as well as the two congressional districts each 10-year federal census. The holdings are co-held by Senator Stephen R. Archambault and Representative Robert D. Phillips. The meeting will air live on Capital Television, on Cox Channels 15 and 61, on Channel 15 of Full Channel, and Channel 34 for Verizon subscribers. the meeting will be streamed here.
