Senator Jack Reed

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ Rhode Island Sen. Jack Reed says he and other Northeast Democrats have been successful in restoring money to a federal transportation bill that would ensure the state gets adequate funding for its bus system.

Reed, a ranking member of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, says he and fellow Democrats worked to remove language included in the previous House-passed bill that would have meant a cut in federal funding to the Rhode Island Public Transportation Authority of more than $8.5 million a year.

Reed says the loss of the funding would have "a devastating impact" on Rhode Island’s public transportation system.

The legislation must be voted on and approved by both the U.S. House and Senate.
