Released RI Murderer Headed to Florida
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – A Rhode Island man sentenced to life for fatally stabbing a rival gang member in a crowded prison yard is being released on parole after serving nine years.
State parole officials say 34-year-old Edson Toro is scheduled to be paroled Thursday and to move to Florida.
Toro was convicted in 2001 for the 1997 slaying of 50-year-old Luis Rivera, a founding member of the Rhode Island Latin Kings.
Toro appealed and won a new trial. He pleaded no contest in 2005 to second-degree murder and was sentenced to 28 years.
Parole Board Chairman Kenneth Walker tells The Providence Journal that Toro was paroled in part because he plans to move away from known criminal associations in Rhode Island.
Florida officials have agreed to supervise Toro while on parole.
