Residents: Middletown landlord evicted them by text

Residents of a Middletown cottage community are upset that their landlord sent them text messages telling them to move out by the end of the week.
The property manager of Sandpiper Cottages told residents to leave because the property had been sold.
Some residents have lived at the site for years.
Middletown officials say the property is technically a motel and residents do not have leases.
Others point out that the site has been for sale for years.
The new owner says it is too early for him to comment.
There has been talk of redeveloping the site into an upscale hotel.
Several residents have met with attorneys. One attorney says he believes Sandpiper was an apartment complex even though leases weren’t involved because it didn’t offer services motels routinely offer.
