Revs Lee Nguyen Named MLS Player of the Week

Revolution news release…

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – New England Revolution midfielder Lee Nguyen has been named the MLS player of the week for Week 32 following a two-goal performance last week. Nguyen scored a pair of second-half goals – including the game-winner in the 87th minute – to turn a 1-0 halftime deficit into a 2-1 Revolution victory on the road over the Houston Dynamo on Thursday, October 16.

A front-runner for the league’s Most Valuable Player award this season, this is Nguyen’s first player of the week honor this year. He is the first Revolution player to earn MLS player of the week this season, which is voted on by the members of the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR).

Nguyen scored his first goal of the game and 16th of the season in the 65th minute to erase a 1-0 deficit and tie the score at 1-1. Jermaine Jones played in Kevin Alston behind the Dynamo defense and the left back played a low, first-time pass to the feet of Nguyen at the top of the penalty area. Nguyen dragged the ball past a sliding defender before curling a right-footed shot into the upper corner to even the score and earn a nomination for the MLS Goal of the Week.

In the 87th minute, Nguyen struck again and clinched the win for New England, beating Houston goalkeeper Tyler Deric from close range for his club-record – and MLS-best – eighth game-winning goal this season. The Dynamo failed to clear a Revs free kick and the ball made its way to Charlie Davies inside the box. He beat a pair of defenders and hit a right-footed shot that was cleared off the line by Houston’s Kofi Sarkodie. However, the rebound fell to Darrius Barnes in the center of the box and he quickly played a short, square pass to Nguyen, who beat Deric for the game-winner.

Nguyen’s 17 goals are tied for fourth in MLS, and his eight game-winning goals lead the league. Dating back to the Revs’ 3-0 win over Colorado on July 30, Nguyen has 11 goals and four assists in the Revs’ last 12 games, including three multiple-goal games.

Nguyen and the rest of the Revolution conclude the MLS regular season on Saturday, October 25, when they host Toronto FC at Gillette Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET,
