Rhode Island College Basketball Set To Open

KINGSTON, R.I. – The bracket for the 2010 2K Sports Classic benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer was announced this afternoon and Rhode Island is set to open the college basketball season on national television.

The Runnin' Rams, coming off a 26-10 campaign and a trip to the National Invitation Tournament semifinals, will travel to face Pittsburgh on Nov. 8 at 7 p.m. in a game televised on ESPNU.

Pittsburgh is coming off a 25-9 campaign a season ago, advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Panthers return their top three scorers and seven of their top eight performers on the offensive end, led by junior guard Ashton Gibbs' 15.7 points per outing.

After the regional round matchup at Pitt, the Rams travel to Toledo, Ohio for a subregional round featuring three games. On Nov. 19, URI will face College of Charleston, followed by a Nov. 20 tilt against host Toledo. Rhody closes out tournament play with Illinois-Chicago on Nov. 21.

The College of Charleston went 22-12 last year and reached the second round of the College Basketball Invitational (CBI) under head coach Bobby Cremins.

Toledo enters its first season under new head coach Tod Kowalczyk, who will lead the Rockets after eight successful seasons at Wisconsin-Green Bay.

Illinois-Chicago returns 12 players from last year's team and should be one of the favorites to challenge Butler in the Horizon League in 2010-11.
